A Family Beach Photoshoot: Creating Memories Across Generations in Cancun

The most meaningful family photographs aren't about matching outfits or perfect poses. They're about bringing everyone together and preserving the moments you'll want to remember for years to come.

A family vacation in Cancun or the Riviera Maya is the perfect opportunity to bring generations together. Grandparents, parents, children, and even little ones who are experiencing the Caribbean for the first time all share something special: time together.
A multigenerational family photoshoot is a beautiful way to preserve that connection. And with a little planning, you can make the experience enjoyable for everyone, from grandparents to the youngest family members.
Here are a few things to consider when planning your family beach photoshoot.
1. Choose a color palette, not matching outfits
One of the most common questions I receive is what everyone should wear for their family photos.
My recommendation? Don't feel that everyone needs to wear the same color, and certainly don't feel that everyone has to wear white!
Instead, choose a color palette that complements the Caribbean surroundings and reflects how you would like to remember your family. Soft neutrals, warm earthy tones, light blues, muted greens, and subtle pastels can all look beautiful against the turquoise sea and sandy beaches.

Think about the feeling you want your photographs to have. Do you imagine something light and timeless, colorful and joyful, or warm and relaxed?
The goal is coordination, not uniforms. Everyone should feel comfortable and look like themselves.
2. Choose a beach that works for everyone
When planning a multigenerational session, location matters just as much as the scenery.

If grandparents or other family members have limited mobility, I recommend choosing a beach with convenient access and a location where we don't need to walk too far over the sand. We can begin with beautiful family portraits close to where the beach starts, allowing grandparents to participate comfortably without feeling exhausted.
And then, as the session continues, the younger family members can enjoy the water, play in the waves, and run along the shoreline.
Some of my favorite family photographs happen when children forget they're having their pictures taken. They laugh, splash, chase the waves, and simply enjoy being together. Don't worry if they end up completely soaked! Those spontaneous moments are often the ones families treasure the most.
3. Choose the right time of day

Timing can make a big difference, especially when coordinating several generations. I usually recommend two options:
Early morning: a wonderful choice for families who prefer a fresh start to the day. The beach is generally quieter, the light is beautiful, and everyone can enjoy the rest of their vacation afterward.
Late afternoon, before dinner: another lovely option, especially if your family is planning a special dinner together. Everyone can get ready for the evening, enjoy their photoshoot, and continue directly to dinner afterward.
I don't recommend scheduling your session around midday. The Caribbean sun can be extremely strong, making it uncomfortable for children and grandparents, and creating harsh shadows and very bright light in photographs. Choosing a more comfortable time allows everyone to relax and enjoy the experience.
4. Make room for different family combinations
One of the most valuable things about a multigenerational photoshoot is that you don't have to settle for just one large group portrait. I love creating a variety of combinations throughout the session:
Everyone together for the complete family portrait.
Grandparents with all their grandchildren.
Each family with their own children.
Couples and individual portraits.
Siblings, cousins, and the little spontaneous moments in between.

These photographs tell a much bigger story than a single group picture. They preserve the relationships within your family and give everyone something personal to take home.
5. Let children be children

You don't need to ask your children to stand perfectly still or smile at the camera throughout the entire session. Some of the most beautiful memories come from letting them be themselves.
Let them hold their grandparents' hands, run toward the water, collect seashells, or simply play with their cousins. I will guide the session so we capture the important family portraits while also leaving room for natural interactions.
The result is a collection of photographs that feels like your family, not a series of forced poses.
More than vacation photographs

Years from now, these photographs will mean much more than a beautiful beach or a memorable vacation. They will remind you of the people who were there, the little hands you held, the grandparents who shared those moments, and the children who were once small enough to run barefoot beside them.
Planning a family vacation in Cancun, Playa del Carmen or the Riviera Maya?
Consider making time for a multigenerational family photoshoot.
Because the most beautiful part of your vacation isn't always the destination. It's the people you get to share it with.
