A flowing dress, the Caribbean behind you, and a photograph that feels a little like magic. A Flying Dress photoshoot in Cancun or the Riviera Maya is a beautiful way to remember your trip—but you may be wondering what the experience actually involves.

What should you wear underneath the dress? Do you need to know how to pose? What happens if there is no wind? And can the session take place on the beach near your hotel?

At Santamaria Photographer, we guide you through the experience, from how to hold the fabric to how to move comfortably. Your session includes an assistant who helps the dress fly, so you do not have to create that movement yourself. Here is what to know before your beach photoshoot.

What should you wear under a Flying Dress?

For comfort during your session, we recommend bringing a swimsuit or nude underwear in a shade close to your skin tone. As the dress lifts and moves, what you wear underneath may occasionally become visible. Choosing something you feel comfortable in helps you relax and enjoy the experience.

If you do not have either option, that is not a problem. Bring something that feels comfortable and supportive for you. The most important thing is that you are not spending the session worrying about your clothing.

Editing includes removing visible bra straps or swimsuit straps. If underwear happens to show as the dress moves, we also address it during editing. Let us know if there is a particular detail you are concerned about so we can keep it in mind while photographing you.

Bring another outfit for more variety

We recommend bringing an additional outfit so your gallery can include both Flying Dress photographs and portraits in your own clothes.

That extra look can be casual, elegant, or somewhere in between. Choose something that feels like you and suits the photographs you would like to have. The goal is to give your gallery a different mood alongside the flowing fabric and dramatic movement of the dress.

A Flying Dress creates a striking image, but a closer portrait or a relaxed photograph in your own outfit can be just as meaningful. Together, these different looks help tell a fuller story of your time in the Riviera Maya. Mention your outfit ideas when planning the session so we can consider them as part of the overall approach.

You do not need to know how to pose

You do not need modeling experience for a Flying Dress photoshoot. You also do not need to memorize poses or arrive knowing what to do with your hands.

During the session, we explain how to hold the dress, where to place your hands, and how to move with the fabric. We guide you through small adjustments rather than expecting you to figure everything out on your own.

Some photographs may involve a gentle turn or a few steps. Others may be quieter, with the focus on your expression, the shape of the dress, or the sea around you. If something feels awkward, tell us. Clear communication is part of creating photographs that feel natural to you.

How does the Flying Dress actually fly?

In the finished photographs, it can look as though the dress is floating by itself. Behind the camera, there is teamwork.

Your session includes an assistant who helps lift and move the fabric. We coordinate that movement with your position and the photograph, creating the flowing effect you see in the final image.

That means we do not rely only on the wind to make the dress fly. Even when there is no breeze to lift it, our assistant helps create the movement. The beach conditions still influence the way the fabric moves and how we approach each photograph.

You focus on the movement or pose we explain; we take care of coordinating the dress. It may look like magic, but we create that magic together.

Can we take the photographs at your hotel beach?

The location depends on your hotel and the available beach access. If there is public access to the beach by your hotel, we may be able to meet you there for the session. Otherwise, we can look for a nearby public beach that works for your photographs.

Some hotels allow outside photographers to enter but charge a vendor fee. This is something to consider when planning your session, and you should confirm the current access requirements directly with your concierge.

Ask whether an outside photographer and assistant can enter, whether a vendor fee applies, and whether advance authorization is needed. Share that information with us before we finalize the location. Sending your hotel name early helps us plan a practical meeting point and discuss the available options.

What will your final gallery look like?

A Flying Dress gallery can offer more than one dramatic photograph. Depending on the location and the approach we plan together, we can create a mix of wide images that show the beach, photographs with the dress in motion, classic portraits, and closer frames focused on your expression.

An additional outfit adds another layer of variety. The examples throughout this article come from different sessions. They show different approaches to fabric, framing, and the beach setting; they are inspiration for planning your own photographs, rather than a promise to reproduce an identical scene.

A few questions before your session

What if I feel nervous in front of the camera?

You do not need to arrive feeling completely confident. We will explain what to do and guide you through the poses and movements.

Do I need wind for the dress to fly?

No. An assistant is included in your session to help create the movement of the dress.

What if a bra or swimsuit strap shows?

Removing visible bra or swimsuit straps is included in the editing. Wear something that helps you feel comfortable during the session.

Can I bring a casual or elegant outfit too?

Yes. We recommend an additional change of clothes to give your photographs more variety.
